Then come, follow me…

“Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”–Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.–You cannot serve both God and money.–Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.  I have discarded everything else, counting it all as rubbish, so that I may have Christ and become one with him.  I no longer count on my own goodness or my ability to obey God’s law, but I trust Christ to save me.–“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.  If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it…. And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process?  Is anything worth more than your soul?”

Jesus’ words are not always easy to swallow, nearly impossible humanly speaking.  But with God, everything is possible.  He speaks, pointing us to what really matters, calling us to loosen our grip on the things we count as treasure and to come find Life.  And I wonder today, are there things I value that hold me back from whole-heartedly following Jesus? May He work in me the attitude of Christ Himself, who gave up His rights to all that was His to take on human form and lead me back to God.  Let us so live, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith.
